Training
The Christian Safeguarding Centre offers different training options to churches and Christian organisations, both in-person and online. A key goal of our training is to help develop a culture of safeguarding, to enable organisations to develop an ongoing, pervasive and healthy commitment to safe environments.

We believe that safeguarding training is an essential part of equipping churches and organisations to protect and care for the vulnerable. Our training helps build communities that are both safe and nurturing, rooted in biblical principles and practical understanding rather than theory alone.
Safeguarding is not just the responsibility of a few professionals, pastors, or designated leads. It is the shared effort of everyone involved in ministry and community life. That is why we encourage churches and organisations to attend training together, so that teams can develop a shared safeguarding culture built on trust, awareness and collective responsibility.
We provide a range of training courses tailored to different roles and levels of responsibility, including sessions on safeguarding children and young people, safeguarding adults at risk, supporting victim-survivors and understanding spiritual abuse. Each course has been carefully developed to address the unique safeguarding challenges within church and faith-based contexts.
For larger churches or organisations with more than ten ministry leaders or volunteers in the same area, we recommend arranging a bespoke training session specifically designed for your context. Our team will work with you to ensure the content is relevant, engaging and applicable to your setting.
For smaller churches and organisations, we offer a series of regular training events throughout the year, which can be booked individually. These sessions provide an excellent opportunity to learn alongside others, share experiences and strengthen collective safeguarding practice.
All our training courses are free of charge for members.
Safeguarding Essentials for children and youth leaders
This course provides a foundation for anyone working with children and young people in church or community settings. It covers the key principles of safeguarding, including recognising signs of abuse or neglect and responding appropriately to concerns. Participants will gain practical guidance in creating safe ministry environments where children and young people can thrive and be protected.
Safeguarding Essentials for adults at risk of harm
This course introduces the key principles of safeguarding adults who may be at risk of harm. It emphasises the importance of respecting autonomy, capacity and consent while ensuring appropriate protection from abuse or neglect. Participants will learn how to recognise concerns, respond safely and work in ways that promote both dignity and independence.
Safeguarding for Coordinators and Leads (Response Team Training)
This advanced course is designed for those who have already completed essential safeguarding training and hold responsibility for leading or coordinating safeguarding within their church or organisation. It focuses on managing concerns, supporting others to respond well and developing effective safeguarding processes. Participants will gain confidence in handling complex situations, maintaining appropriate records and working constructively with statutory agencies when required.
Managing Safeguarding issues within the setting of churches and Christian organisations can feel daunting at times. So rather and try to figure out everything yourself, we offer to walk alongside you as work out what safeguarding looks like in your context, or if you are unsure if how a safeguarding concern should be handled.
We can provide safeguarding consultancy for specific, ad-hoc or ongoing issues or projects or all sized. We generally try to provide our services for free but for extensive or large-scale project work, we may need to discuss a fee-based arrangement.
This course provides guidance on how to respond sensitively and appropriately to those who have experienced abuse. It helps participants understand the impact of trauma and the importance of listening, believing and offering support in a safe and respectful way. The session is suitable for anyone involved in pastoral care, leadership or community support roles.
Understanding Spiritual Abuse
The term spiritual abuse is increasingly recognised, though its definition and use can be a matter of debate or disagreement. In this course, we use the term to describe situations where power and authority are misused within faith settings, leading to spiritual harm. Participants will learn how to recognise such behaviours, respond appropriately to concerns and foster a healthy and respectful culture within their church or organisation. This course is particularly suited to those in leadership roles, and to anyone seeking to promote a culture of safe church and accountable ministry practices.
